Bath Time For Baby
May 30th, 2011It’s time for baby’s first bath. It can be a little unnerving, especially if you are a new mother and never given a newborn a bath. Don’t worry though, you’ll do just fine. Since the beginning of time, mothers have been giving babies a bath. With all the new types of tubs designed for infants and toddlers, it’s safer today. And many babies love getting a bath!
Sponge baths is what you should give your newborn until the umbilical cord heals or during the first couple of weeks. Since your baby doesn’t need a bath every day, you can give sponge baths twice a week or as often as you feel is necessary. It is important to go ahead and gather everything you will need before you start. And here is the equipment you will need to wash a newborn: thick towels or a sponge-type bath cushion, soft washcloths, a bath seat for a basin or sink, cotton balls, baby shampoo and baby soap (non-irritating), a hooded baby towel, a clean diaper and clothing.
You need to make sure that the room you’re using is warm, preferably around 75 degrees F. At the bottom of the seat/tub, place a non-skid cushion or towel so your baby will not slide around. Run warm water into the tub or sink, between 90-100 degrees or warm to the inside of your wrist. While talking to a soothing voice and explaining what you are doing, gently undress your baby. Slowly place your baby in the water.
You can start with the face using just a little bit of baby soap. Next, wash the head, and continue moving downwards. The areas you should thoroughly clean when bathing your baby include the neck, groin area, ears, and buttocks. Try not to get the umbilical cord area wet, gently clean with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol. If your son is circumcised, then you should avoid moving the foreskin when cleaning the groin area. Finish with the backside once the front is clean.
Dress your baby once you’ve dried them thoroughly. The head should be completely dry. The first time may take a little bit of time because they will squirm and they are very slippery. But never take your hands off your baby. Once you both get used to this routine, it will be extremely easy. Have fun!
